When one door opens

On Monday night, Chris took me out to dinner and I was telling him how I enjoyed working with him on some recent assignments. I said I wondered what it would be like if one of us didn't work in journalism. I should have kept my mouth shut.

Tuesday I went to work and dropped a bagel off to Chris, and he informed me that there would be 10 newsroom employees laid off. I soon found out that I am one of them. I'm told that it was purely based on tenure, and told once my severance ends I can come back on the "temp team," which is nice to have as an option, but also less pay and less hours. So, right now, I'm at a crossroads. I don't know what this means for grad school or anything else. We have a lot to figure out at the moment. I do know that I love the news business. It would be great to be a part of the next era of journalism. But if that also means always waiting for another day like yesterday, then I just don't know.

Oh Tammy! I am sorry to hear this. Sounds like you have your head on right though. Big hug and prayers your way!

As a former newsy, I can tell you there are is a lot of work out there if you can write and hustle.

Start looking online at freelancing articles and submit stuff to magazines around town. If Chris's health insurance will cover you, I'm sure you can make ends meet even while being on the temp team!

This is not a negative, this is the chance for you to do exactly what you've always wanted to do. You can write, sell jewelry on etsy, start a cooking blog, it's going to be AMAZING!!!!

Wow, Tammy! I'm sorry to hear that!

But, I do agree with Kat - you are a talented writer, and I think your possibilities are endless.

(And if you DO open an Etsy shop, let me know! I have some shopping to do!)

Tammy, what a bummer! Continue to be positive! You are so talented and things will work out. Now you can focus on grad school and do all those other things at the same time. We will keep you and Chris in our prayers!

Sorry to hear that Tammy. Hang in there. There is always work for hard workers, and I know you are one of those.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments, e-mails, texts and calls. I'm avoiding decision making for a couple days and headed to my Dad and Debbie's for a few days while Chris is in Salt Lake for work. Hope everyone has a great Easter!
